حروف الجر هي الكلمات التي تعبر عن العلاقات إذا لم تستخدم حروف الجر، فلن يكون للجملة معنى، كما تُستخدم أنواع مختلفة من حروف الجر في اللغة الإنجليزية، ولا يمكنها إضافة التفاصيل فحسب، بل يمكنها أيضًا إضافة جمل كاملة. تستخدم حروف الجر للتعبير عن المكان والوقت والاتجاه والسبب والحيازة.

تعد حروف الجر جزءًا مهمًا من اللغة الإنجليزية، حيث يتم استخدامه للتعبير عن العلاقة بين اسم أو ضمير في جملة وكلمة أخرى في الجملة، كما يجب أن يتبع حرف الجر دائمًا الاسم أو الضمير في الجملة، و لا يمكن أبدا أن يتبع الفعل.

يتكون حرف الجر المركب من كلمتين أو أكثر، وفي الطبيعي ما يكون حرف جر بسيط وكلمة أخرى تشير إلى الموضع مثل in addition to, on behalf of, and in the middle of.

I attended the meeting on behalf of my company.
We were in the middle of the storm.
He has gym class in addition to his regular classes today.
He picked up the penny from beneath the couch.

وفقًا لقاموس Merriam-Webster Learners، فإن حرف الجر هو: “كلمة أو مجموعة من الكلمات المستخدمة مع الأسماء أو الضمائر أو العبارات الاسمية لإظهار الاتجاه أو الموقع أو الوقت أو كيفية عرض الأشياء.”
تعبر حروفالجر عن علاقات مثل (الموقع ، الإتجاه) ، الوقت ، أو الموقع كاستعارات، كما تحتوي حروفالجر دائمًا على كائن (عادةً اسم أو ضمير) تسمى حروفالجر وكائناتها (وأي مُعدِلات) حروف الجر.
على سبيل المثال:يظهر حرف الجر “on” في “The flask is on the labsha”.
